Well supported: GEHWOL supported the Special Olympics National Games 2022
Helping people with intellectual disabilities gain more recognition, self-confidence and inclusion through sport - this is what the Special Olympics stand for. This year's Special Olympics National Games in Berlin (19 - 24 June) lived up to these values. Eduard Gerlach GmbH was happy to contribute by supporting the associated Healthy Athletes® health programme.
From badminton to triathlon, about 4,000 athletes measured their performance in 20 different sports, making the National Games a true sports festival. Health care is crucial with so much intense competition. And in this respect, Healthy Athletes® is unique: Along with free improvements to training and competitiveness through on-site treatment, there are also offers regarding health promotion and prevention, which are especially important when caring for people with intellectual disabilities. Due to the common prevalence of poorer health and a higher risk of additional health limitations, the programmes offered hold a special place in the care of people with intellectual disabilities.
Fit Feet
The podological health service Fit Feet is one of the seven health programmes brought together by Healthy Athletes®. GEHWOL sponsored practical products as a part of this, supporting the podology team in taking care of a total of 4,000 active participants. Here, 485 athletes received podological examinations and treatments at this year's National Games, along with education about preventing foot issues and skin diseases. To encourage individual foot care, gift bags with a collection of products and samples from GEHWOL and GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT product ranges - along with information brochures - were also given to all athletes and helpers.

A taste of 2023 to come
Next year's event is already highly anticipated: After the National Games this year, the 16th Special Olympics World Games will be held from 17 to 25 June 2023, also in Berlin. About 7,000 athletes from over 170 nations and 300,000 guests from all over the world are expected for this global, inclusive sporting event.
