The microbiome of the skin consists of many billions of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. It keeps the skin barrier intact. But external influences such as frequent washing, dry heating air and unsuitable care products can impair the balance of the skin flora. This may lead to dryness, redness and a feeling of tension. A healthy and radiant complexion requires a stable and intact barrier function of the epidermis. The hydro-lipid barrier is mainly located in the upper layer of the skin, which is also called the stratum corneum or horny layer. This outer coat consists of 15 to 25 layers of corneocytes (dead skin cells) embedded in polymerized keratin. The intact barrier allows moisture to penetrate the lower skin layers (hydration) and prevents the loss of moisture (TEWL: transepidermal water loss).

Microorganisms on the skin surface help to maintain the barrier function of the skin. The so-called microbiome consists of billions of bacteria, viruses and fungi such as Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, Corynebacterium, Propionibacterium, Malassezia or Acinetobacter. It is estimated that there are a total of between 10 and 100 trillion microorganisms in humans, a large part of which forms the skin flora. External influences such as frequent washing or dry heating air can disturb the microbial balance of the skin, which means that it loses the ability to protect itself. This is often accompanied by an impairment of the epidermal barrier function and loss of moisture. Skin problems such as dryness, redness or a feeling of tension can arise.

Three active ingredients for keeping the skin healthy

Probiotic skin care starts before such problems arise and thus helps to keep the skin healthy. Regular care supports the skin barrier and protects it against external influences. With GEHWOL and GERLASAN balance, a probiotic concept for foot, leg and hand care is now being launched on the market.

The basis of the innovative development is formed by three active ingredients. On the one hand the probiotic Biotilys^®: The skin barrier strengthener is fermented from Lactobacillus pentosus and consequently has the protective and regenerative properties of these lactic acid bacteria. Placebo-controlled clinical studies¹ prove that Biotilys^® reduces the TEWL to one third and restores the skin barrier.

In addition, the in vivo studies showed a significant increase in hydration (skin moisture). Biotilys^® also has an antimicrobial effect and serves as a radical scavenger.

White tea acts as a moisturizer in the balance products. The Chinese discovered the health-promoting effects of this tea. For one kilogramme, 30,000 buds have to be picked by hand. High-quality white tea contains caffeine, many vitamins as well as iron, calcium, potassium, fluoride, sodium and zinc. The white tea extract used in the three balance products is purely natural and is extracted from the leaves of Camellia sinensis. It provides the skin with moisture and supports Biotilys^® in protecting against moisture loss. The sesame oil contained rounds off the recipe. It is popular in cosmetics due to its nourishing properties and its large proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, for example linoleic acid. The care booster makes the skin noticeably smoother and more supple.

GEHWOL balance Foot Cream combines the foot care expertise of the traditional GEHWOL brand with the innovative concept of probiotics. Regular care with the probiotic Foot Cream – if necessary several times a day – strengthens the skin barrier and reduces the loss of moisture in the skin (TEWL). In this way, it also prevents possible skin problems such as redness, dry skin and feelings of tightness. The cream is easily distributed, rapidly absorbed and non-greasy.

In combination with the Foot Cream, the probiotic lotion from the balance series offers a real care boost. Above all, the sesame oil contained in the recipe ensures noticeably smoother and more supple skin. It also protects against moisture loss. The lotion is quickly absorbed and does not leave an annoying grease film. In addition, it spreads very well on the skin.

GERLASAN balance Hand Cream

Using the experience of the GERLASAN hand care brand, the probiotic Hand Cream of the balance series was created. Frequent hand washing is particularly stressful for the skin. Thanks to its active ingredients, GERLASAN balance Hand Cream provides the skin with moisture and at the same time protects it from moisture loss and makes it supple and smooth.

The balance product range follows a minimalist approach. In this sense, only as many ingredients as were absolutely necessary for the formulations were used. The vegan balance care for normal to dry skin is therefore also PEG-free and without parabens or silicone oil. It is dermatologically tested, and suitable for diabetics.
